Why This Year’s GCSE Students Are the Most Affected by Covid-19 – and How We’re Helping
12 May 2025

This May half term, Sophos Education is running a live-streamed GCSE Crash Course, created specifically to support the students hardest hit by the pandemic.
With daily online lessons led by Oxbridge tutors in English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics — all available live and on-demand — we’re helping students master exam technique, revise core content, and walk into exams ready to succeed.
Recent research has confirmed what many parents already suspected: this year’s Year 11s face unprecedented educational and emotional challenges. As they approach their GCSEs, it’s essential we understand how to support GCSE students and adapt revision to address their specific learning gaps.
The COVID Generation: Struggling With Gaps, Focus, and Confidence
According to The Sunday Times, teenagers sitting GCSEs in 2025 are "the worst-hit by the Covid pandemic of any year group at secondary school”. They missed the final months of primary school and began secondary school with online learning, masks, and social distancing.
Teachers now report widespread learning gaps, poor focus, and mental health concerns. A national survey of nearly 7,000 teachers found that nearly a quarter identified Year 11s as the worst affected by pandemic-related disruption.
Long-Term Consequences: What the Research Says
Groundbreaking research from LSE, University of Exeter, and University of Strathclyde goes even further. Their model predicts that fewer than 4 in 10 students will achieve a Grade 5 or above in English and Maths by 2030 — a significant drop from pre-pandemic performance.
This isn't just an academic issue. The report warns of a 12–15% decline in income mobility, meaning this generation may face long-term consequences in life chances, careers, and wellbeing without intervention.
Why Traditional Revision Isn’t Enough
Many students in this cohort show shorter attention spans, struggle with motivation, and benefit more from structured, bite-sized learning than traditional revision methods.
“This year’s revision sessions are more ‘bite-sized’, with regular breaks, because their concentration is not always as embedded as previous generations.”
— Shaun Fenton, Head Teacher, Reigate Grammar School
They’ve missed more than content — they’ve missed learning how to learn. That’s why parents and schools are increasingly looking for revision that supports both academic knowledge and emotional resilience.
